SPD to Address Election Defeat - Restructuring by June - SPD collapses to historic low in Baden-Württemberg's state election

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Baden-Württemberg has suffered its worst-ever election result. Preliminary figures show the party won just 5.5 percent of the vote in the recent state election. Following the heavy losses, party leader Andreas Stoch and secretary-general Sascha Binder have both announced their resignations.

The SPD's decline in Baden-Württemberg has been steady over the past two decades. In 2001, the party secured 23.1 percent of the vote, but support fell to 25.7 percent in 2006, then back to 23.1 percent in 2011. By 2016, it had dropped to 15.1 percent, and in 2021, it reached 11.7 percent. The latest result marks a historic low.

Analysts suggest several factors contributed to the sharp decline. The far-right AfD achieved a record-high result, while the Greens gained more voters. Internal SPD disputes and dissatisfaction with state policies—particularly in education and the economy—also played a role.

A state party conference on June 20 will elect a new executive board. The SPD's youth wing, the Jusos, has pushed for a member survey to help shape the leadership changes. The party plans to review the election outcome over the coming months with external support.

The goal is to establish a new leadership structure by summer.

The SPD now faces a major restructuring after its worst-ever election results in the region. A new leadership team will take over by June, with plans to address the party's decline. The coming months will focus on analysing the election and rebuilding support.
