SPD Leaders Agree: Military Service Remains Voluntary

In a surprising turn of events, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) met with his internal opponents, Falko Droßmann and Siemtje Möller, during a plenary session. The trio agreed to maintain the principle of voluntariness for military service, despite earlier debates on mandatory conscription.

Two days prior, Möller and Droßmann had negotiated a compromise with union politicians for a lottery system in recruitment if volunteers were insufficient. However, Pistorius criticized this proposal, leading to an emotional response from Möller, who was seen with tears in her eyes outside the faction room.

Following this, Pistorius, Droßmann, and Möller wrote a joint letter to their SPD faction, clarifying their stance on the new military service. In this letter, they agreed that if there were not enough volunteers, clear legal regulations for any obligations would be created, and the Bundestag would decide on this. SPD faction leader Matthias Miersch later admitted that the SPD would not support the change in military service recruitment.

The meeting between Pistorius, Droßmann, and Möller has clarified the SPD's position on the new military service. The principle of voluntariness remains the guiding principle, with legal regulations to be decided upon if necessary. The SPD faction has been informed of this stance.
