SPD members clash in Berlin-Mitte over internal party rivalry

A physical confrontation broke out between two SPD members during a party meeting in Berlin-Mitte. Maja Lasic, the education policy spokesperson, allegedly assaulted Kazem Radpasand, a fellow party official and her rival. The incident took place on September 10, 2025, just before an event at the SPD's Berlin headquarters.

The clash began when Lasic confronted Radpasand outside the SPD offices. Witnesses reported that she shouted at him and twisted his arm. Radpasand later filed a complaint with the party's Awareness Team, detailing the alleged assault.

The dispute stemmed from an ongoing conflict over safe list positions within the SPD's Mitte district branch. Lasic and Radpasand had previously competed in internal votes, with Lasic winning both the candidate selection and another party ballot. Radpasand denied claims that his accusations were driven by political frustration. Lasic admitted her verbal behaviour was inappropriate but strongly denied any physical aggression. Despite the incident, no immediate changes to the SPD's internal power structure or candidate nominations for the 2026 state elections have been announced. Lasic currently serves as an alternate member on the local executive board, which Radpasand leads. The party has not yet commented on further disciplinary actions or investigations.

The altercation has raised questions about internal tensions within the Berlin-Mitte SPD. Both members remain in their roles for now, though the incident may influence future party decisions. No official statement has been made regarding its impact on upcoming elections.
