SPD Solingen: Solidarity with the people of Israel

The SPD Solingen has strongly condemned the attacks by Hamas and allied militant groups on Israel. In a public statement, the party described the violence as unjustifiable acts of terror. Leaders also called for ongoing solidarity with victims and their families in the aftermath of the 7 October assaults.

The local branch of Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) has urged society to reject antisemitism and all forms of inhumanity. Their remarks come amid wider public displays of support for Israel in Solingen, including vigils and statements from Jewish organisations, city officials, and civic groups.

On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led militias launched a series of attacks against Israel. The assaults prompted swift reactions in Solingen, where municipal leaders, Jewish communities, and memorial organisations publicly expressed solidarity. The SPD Solingen later issued its own condemnation, labelling the violence as an attack on human rights and civilised values.

Co-chairs Sabine Vischer-Kippenhahn and Manfred Ackermann spoke out forcefully. Vischer-Kippenhahn framed the attacks as a strike against a world built on human dignity. Ackermann dismissed any attempt to justify the violence, calling it pure terrorism. The party also reaffirmed its ties with Israel, particularly with Ness Ziona, Solingen’s partner city. Beyond political statements, the SPD pledged to uphold peaceful coexistence for Jewish people—locally, nationally, and globally. Their message stressed that normalcy cannot resume until both Israelis and Palestinians in Gaza are free from Hamas and its allies. In the weeks following the attacks, Solingen saw multiple acts of solidarity. The mayor, city council members, and pro-Israel groups joined Jewish communities in public gatherings. These events underscored the city’s stance against hatred and violence.

The SPD Solingen’s statements add to a broader wave of support for Israel within the city. Their call to reject antisemitism and defend human rights aligns with actions taken by local leaders and organisations. The party’s position also highlights the ongoing impact of the 7 October attacks on international and community relations.
