Now the SPD is also joining the tax debate - SPD’s bold reforms target tax relief, AI growth and worker support in 2024
The SPD has outlined a series of economic reforms aimed at easing financial pressure on workers and boosting digital growth. Among the key proposals are tax changes, higher student aid, and support for small businesses adopting artificial intelligence. Deputy parliamentary leader Wiebke Esdar is leading the party’s negotiations on these measures.
The SPD wants to overhaul income tax in 2024 to reduce the burden on low- and middle-income earners. At the same time, the party plans to reform inheritance tax to close loopholes used by wealthy individuals to avoid payments.
To tackle Germany’s labour shortage, the SPD is pushing for increased immigration. The party also proposes raising student financial aid (BAföG) to €563 per month and lifting the housing allowance to €440. A central part of the SPD’s plan is an 'AI offensive' for small and medium-sized businesses. This includes state-funded 'AI vouchers' to help companies adopt digital tools and improve productivity. The party argues that such measures will create a more forward-looking economy. Esdar, responsible for budget and finance, is representing the SPD in talks on these reforms. The proposals reflect the party’s call for stronger industrial policies and an economy that better supports workers and innovation.
The reforms would introduce tax relief for millions while targeting tax avoidance by the wealthy. If implemented, the AI vouchers and higher student aid could reshape support for both businesses and young people. The SPD’s plans now face further negotiation before any changes take effect.
