Christian Frenzel, the current ombudsman and former head of the state chancellery, has accepted the role following the resignation of Wolfgang Schmülling amidst a promotion scandal in the United States.

Schmülling stepped down last week while investigations into suspected accessory to embezzlement continue. Frenzel, who is also a member of the SPD, will take up the post on October 27, 2025.
