SPD Politician Mehmed König Leaves Party - SPD’s Mehmed König quits over ideological clashes, eyes Left Party shift
Mehmed König, a long-standing member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has resigned after eight years. The former co-chair of SPDqueer Berlin cited deep disagreements with the party’s direction as the reason for his departure. He is now considering joining the Left Party instead.
König arrived in Germany in 1993 as a war refugee from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Over time, he became an active SPD member, serving on the Berlin state executive board and co-leading SPDqueer Berlin, the party’s LGBTQ+ working group.
König’s exit highlights tensions within the SPD over migration, foreign policy, and the handling of extremism. His potential move to the Left Party would further reshape Berlin’s political landscape. The SPD has yet to comment on his resignation or its implications.
