SPÖ's Gabriele Scharrer Elected Mayor of Vösendorf
Vösendorf has a new mayor. Gabriele Scharrer, a Social Democrat (SPÖ), has taken over from Hannes Koza, who resigned earlier this year. Scharrer's election follows a coalition agreement between the SPÖ and Bürgerliste V2000, which now holds the majority in the municipal council.
The political landscape in Vösendorf has shifted. The ÖVP has lost its absolute majority, leading to the formation of a new coalition between the SPÖ and Bürgerliste V2000. This coalition now has 18 seats, with support from NEOS and the Greens. Gabriele Scharrer, a member of the SPÖ, has been elected as the new mayor with 19 out of 31 valid votes in the constitutive session.
Scharrer's election comes after a series of events surrounding the previous mayor, Hannes Koza. In December 2024, Koza simulated an attack on himself, leading to his resignation in February 2025. Birgit Petross served as the interim mayor during this period.
With Gabriele Scharrer's election, the SPÖ now holds the highest number of seats in the Vösendorf municipal council and has gained a significant position in the region. The SPÖ's influence in Lower Austria has grown, with Scharrer becoming the 107th mayor in the 573 municipalities. The new coalition is expected to bring changes to the governance of Vösendorf.
