St. Gallen’s Beloved Christmas Stars Fade Into Uncertainty After 15 Years

After 15 years of illuminating St. Gallen’s Old Town, the iconic Christmas stars are slowly losing their glow. The city can no longer afford to replace the aging decorations, leaving their future uncertain. Without private funding, the festive display will grow dimmer each year.

The St. Gallen Stars were first installed in 2009 at a cost of around four million Swiss francs. Each two-metre-wide star can shine in shifting colours and patterns, even synchronizing for choreographed light shows. Over time, they became a unique symbol of the city’s Christmas celebrations.

The fading stars leave St. Gallen’s Christmas display in limbo. Without new funding, the city will rely on a shrinking number of working lights for the next two years. The future of the full 700-star spectacle now depends on private backers and the success of ongoing prototype tests.
