St Helena's Election Praised for Transparency, International Observers Back Island's Democracy
St Helena, a remote island with fewer than 4,000 residents, recently held a general election for its 12-member Legislative Council. The election day process was praised for its transparency and organisation, attracting international observers.
Gary Clueit MLC led an Election Observation Mission, comprising parliamentarians from Guernsey and Gibraltar, to assess the conduct of the election day. The mission, organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association British Islands and Mediterranean Region (CPA BIMR), aimed to ensure international standards of transparency, fairness, and integrity were upheld.
Before election day, the observers met with various stakeholders, including candidates, civil society representatives, and government officials. On the election day itself, the team visited all seven polling stations across the island to observe voting and counting procedures. The mission's report aims to support the people of St Helena in strengthening democratic processes on the island.
From the elected members, an executive council of five, including the chief minister, is chosen to form the island's unicameral parliament. The name of the Chairman of the Executive Council, elected from the Legislative Council members, is not available at this time.
St Helena's general election was commended for its transparency and organisation. The international observation mission supported the island's democratic processes, ensuring they met international standards. The elected members will now form the island's unicameral parliament, with an executive council of five, including the chief minister.
