Starmer Rules Out Mandelson's Return to Front-Line Politics

Labour leader Keir Starmer has confirmed that Peter Mandelson will not be returning to front-line politics, following his dismissal as U.K. Ambassador to Washington in September 2025. The decision comes after revelations about Mandelson's close friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Mandelson, who has a history of scandal, was appointed to the role in 2023 despite his past resignations from government in 1998 and 2001. His appointment was criticized by Labour MP Paula Barker.

Starmer has not committed to allowing Mandelson to return to the House of Lords, where he took a leave of absence to become the ambassador. An application to return would trigger a three-month notice period, but Mandelson has not yet applied. Mandelson was removed from his post following the Epstein revelations, with no indication he plans to return as a Labour member to the House of Lords.

Mandelson's political future remains uncertain. Starmer has ruled out a government role for him and has not committed to a return to the House of Lords. The Labour Party will need to decide on his future as a member, given his scandalous past and recent events.
