Starnberg's CSU triumphs in local elections with 24-year high

Starnberg's latest local elections have reshaped the municipal council, with the Christian Social Union (CSU) securing its strongest result in 24 years. The party gained ten seats after increasing its vote share by 4.8 percentage points. Meanwhile, new and returning groups saw mixed fortunes as voter preferences shifted.

The CSU took 31.7% of the vote, marking its first double-digit seat count since 1996. This surge gave the party a clear lead over rivals. The Greens held steady with six seats, though their share dipped slightly to 20.1%, down 1.6 points from 2020.

The Social Democrats (SPD) became the third-largest group in the council. Their performance outpaced smaller parties, though exact figures for their vote share were not immediately detailed. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) entered the council for the first time, winning 7.5% of the vote and two seats. The Free Democrats (FDP) also returned with 7.0%, securing two seats and full faction status. Among independent groups, WPS (Wählergruppe Pro Starnberg) remained the strongest, taking 7.8% of the vote. However, it lost one seat, leaving it with two representatives. Ralf Breitenfeldt, WPS chair, described the outcome as disappointing, citing major changes affecting residents. No overall shift in seat distribution had occurred since the 2020 elections, as no new communal votes took place before March 2026. The next full elections are scheduled for 2026, with preliminary results for some communities already available.

The CSU's gains and the AfD's debut mark the most notable changes in Starnberg's council. The Greens and WPS retained influence but saw minor setbacks. The results reflect evolving voter priorities ahead of the 2026 elections.
