Steinmeier champions civic engagement in Hoyerswerda’s grassroots initiatives

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is visiting Hoyerswerda today, starting at 11:00 a.m. His trip will focus on civic engagement and dialogue with local residents. A key part of the visit includes meeting with young political activists from the city’s youth council.

Steinmeier’s first stop will be the Kulturfabrik Hoyerswerda, a well-known hub for social cohesion and democratic values. There, he will honour the association as a 'place of encounter' before touring its repair workshop. Discussions will centre on volunteer work and the future of Hoyerswerda’s community.

Later, the president will join a public event organised by Deutschlandradio’s Denkfabrik series. The theme, 'Taking Action Instead of Complaining: What Happens When Everyone Pitches In...' encourages civic participation. During his visit, Steinmeier will also speak with members of the Jugendstadtrat, Hoyerswerda’s youth city council, to hear their perspectives on local issues.

The visit highlights the importance of grassroots initiatives in strengthening democracy. By engaging with young activists and community projects, Steinmeier aims to recognise and support Hoyerswerda’s efforts in fostering social unity. The day’s events will conclude with a public discussion on collective action and civic responsibility.
