More than ten million euros for monument preservation - Stendal Cathedral’s €10M Gothic Revival Secures National Funding for 2023 Restoration

Stendal Cathedral, a 14th-century Gothic landmark in Saxony-Anhalt, is set for major restoration work in 2023. The project has secured funding from both state and federal sources, with the German government’s special infrastructure fund pledging up to €5.4 million for the federal holidays 2025. Officials describe the cathedral as a vital part of the region’s cultural heritage.

The Stendal Cathedral Foundation oversees the site, which stands as one of Germany’s most important Gothic monuments. Restoration efforts will focus on preserving its architectural legacy while uncovering its past. Recent excavations during the renovation revealed traces of an earlier structure beneath the cathedral.

Last year, Saxony-Anhalt allocated €10.3 million for heritage conservation projects. Cultural Minister Rainer Robra highlighted the role of historic landmarks in shaping local identity and bridging generations. The state’s financial commitment reflects a broader effort to protect and maintain cultural sites across the region. The federal contribution of up to €5.4 million underscores the cathedral’s national significance. The funding will support structural repairs and conservation work, ensuring the building remains accessible for future visitors. Authorities have emphasised the project’s importance in safeguarding Germany’s architectural history.

The restoration of Stendal Cathedral will move forward with combined state and federal backing. The project aims to stabilise the structure while preserving its historical features. Completion of the work will allow the cathedral to continue serving as a cultural and architectural centrepiece in Saxony-Anhalt.
