Stephan Weil to remain in state parliament until 2027 - Stephan Weil to remain in state parliament until 2027
Stephan Weil has stepped down as minister-president of Lower Saxony but will remain active in politics. His focus now shifts to defending democracy across the state while continuing his work as a lawmaker. The long-serving SPD politician has no plans to leave public life before the legislative term ends in 2027.
Weil still holds a seat in the state parliament, where he now sits in the fourth row of the SPD faction. Beside him is Antonia Hillberg, the party’s youngest member, born in 2001 and representing Hildesheim. The change in position marks a new chapter after his time leading the state.
His current role centres on speaking about the protection of democracy. Weil has also returned to constituency work in Hannover-Buchholz, an area he had less time for while serving as minister-president. He has admitted that the SPD’s future in Lower Saxony belongs to a new generation but remains willing to offer advice when needed. Despite stepping back from the top job, Weil has made it clear he will not retire. Instead, he plans to stay in the state parliament until the end of the current term in 2027.
Weil’s transition from minister-president to backbench lawmaker brings a different rhythm to his political career. He will keep working on democratic issues while supporting his constituency. His presence in the parliament ensures he remains part of Lower Saxony’s political landscape for years to come.
