Thieves Throw Stolen Church Cross into Trash Can - Stolen Church Cross Found in Dumpster and Restored in Pleidelsheim
A large metal cross was stolen from a church façade in Pleidelsheim last Friday. The missing item was later found discarded in a nearby dumpster. Police quickly recovered the cross and returned it to its original place.
The theft took place between 4:00 PM and 10:30 PM on Friday. Unknown perpetrators removed the 1.5-metre-tall and 1-metre-wide cross from the church wall. They then dumped it in a trash bin roughly 200 metres away.
A passerby spotted the cross in the dumpster and immediately notified the authorities. Two officers responded to the call and retrieved the undamaged metal cross. They reattached it to the church façade without delay. Over the past two years, German police and the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz have recorded between 150 and 200 cases of vandalism or damage to church property. The incidents have been most frequent in Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Berlin.
The cross has now been restored to its position on the church. No suspects have been identified in connection with the theft. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
