Struggling in a Digital Age: Three Lives Transformed by Technology

A new episode of the ZDF documentary series 37 Grad will air on Tuesday, August 26, at 10:15 p.m. Titled Left Behind in the Digital World, it follows three individuals navigating the challenges of modern technology. The film highlights how digital inclusion remains crucial for older adults and those with disabilities.

After its broadcast, the episode will also be available for streaming on ZDF’s platform. Ilona Kalmbach and Sabine Jainski produced the feature, which is part of the long-running 37 Grad series.

The documentary focuses on three individuals facing different digital hurdles. One of them is 86-year-old Eva from Hesse, who receives her first smartphone with her granddaughter’s help. She soon discovers its benefits, such as an app that identifies plants in her garden. To build confidence, Eva also attends a smartphone café organised by the Evangelical Church, where she learns basic digital skills.

Another participant, 57-year-old Stephan, has lived with severe visual impairment for 30 years. For him, digitalisation presents both obstacles and opportunities. The film shows how he adapts to technology despite the difficulties it poses. Sabine, a 57-year-old nurse from Berlin, also features in the episode. She struggles with digital tools required for her job and admits feeling frustrated and ashamed by her lack of confidence. The documentary explores how these personal stories reflect broader issues of accessibility and support in an increasingly digital society.

The episode underscores the importance of ensuring no one is left behind as technology advances. It will air on ZDF at 22:15 on August 26, with streaming access available afterward. Viewers will see firsthand how digital skills—or the lack of them—impact daily life for many people.
