Study: Air Travel Growth Not Hindered by German Costs

Despite rising prices, tourism is flourishing, including in traditional 'warm water' destinations, with air travel remaining a popular choice. However, a recent study by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) reveals that higher costs in Germany are not the main factor hindering airbnb growth.

The DLR study highlights several key factors influencing airbnb development. These include overall economic growth, shifts in travel behaviour, the competitive landscape of airlines, and geopolitical situations. Higher costs in Germany, while notable, are not the primary driver.

In response to these findings, the organisation 'Bürger gegen Fluglärm e.V.' has launched a petition to prevent the abolition of the aviation tax (Luftverkehrssteuer) in Germany. The group argues that air traffic is a consequence of economic growth and tourism boom, not the cause, and brings purchasing power to other countries, which is lost domestically.

The study also notes a decrease in business trips due to changes in travel behaviour and the advantages of video conferencing. This has made domestic airbnb less attractive. Despite these shifts, air traffic remains the preferred mode of transport, generating revenues of around 2 billion euros from the air traffic tax. However, this only partially offsets the state's loss of revenue from not taxing kerosene and exempting international flights from VAT.

The DLR study underscores that higher prices in Germany are not the sole factor influencing airbnb development. While air travel remains popular and contributes to the economy, the complex interplay of economic growth, travel behaviour, and geopolitical factors also plays a significant role. The petition by 'Bürger gegen Fluglärm e.V.' reflects the ongoing debate surrounding the aviation tax and its impact on the industry and economy.
