Study: Anti-Muslim Sentiment Based on Xenophobia - Study Reveals True Roots of Islamophobia in Western Europe

A new study has examined the roots of Islamophobia in Western Europe. Researchers analysed responses from nearly 75,000 people across the UK, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Their findings challenge assumptions about the role of personal faith in shaping anti-Muslim bias.

The research found no clear link between personal religiosity and hostility toward Islam. Even among those with strong Christian beliefs, individual faith played little to no role in fuelling prejudice. Instead, the study identified authoritarian tendencies as the strongest driver of anti-Muslim attitudes.

The findings point to a specific set of ideological drivers behind Islamophobia in Western Europe. Rather than personal faith, xenophobic and authoritarian attitudes shape anti-Muslim sentiment. This research underscores the need to address the political and cultural forces that sustain such prejudice.
