Study Shows Drop in Generation Z Americans Identifying as Transgender or Queer
A new study by Professor Eric Kaufmann reveals a significant drop in Generation Z Americans identifying as transgender or queer. The findings, ranging from 6.8% in 2023 to 3.6% in 2025, suggest a shift away from progressive non-conformity in lifestyle and self-expression. Paul Dupont, policy director at American Principles Project, views this as positive, stating that adopting an identity at odds with one's biology is not healthy.
The report, conducted by Kaufmann from the Centre for Heterodox Social Science, indicates that gender and sexual identity among young people operates independently of politics and culture war attitudes. Freshmen in 2024-25 were less trans and queer than seniors, suggesting a continued fall in gender/sexual non-conformity. Kaufmann believes this decline signals a move towards a more socially conservative society.
The study, primarily based on data from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression's (FIRE) annual survey, also suggests that improving mental health is connected to this trend, though partially. Dupont hopes this decline will make it easier to remove gender ideology from its remaining strongholds in blue states, cities, hospitals, and school districts.
The report underscores the influence of social factors in shaping the rise and decline of trans, queer, and bisexual identity among young people. With a significant decrease in Generation Z Americans identifying as transgender or queer, the societal landscape appears to be shifting, potentially signaling a move away from progressive non-conformity in lifestyle and self-expression.
