Stuttgart Marks 35 Years of Reunification, Proposes Kohl Street Honor
Stuttgart marked the 35th anniversary of German reunification with a ceremony at the town hall. Former Federal Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière delivered the keynote speech, reflecting on the ongoing impact of reunification. Meanwhile, Mayor Frank Nopper proposed honouring former Chancellor Helmut Kohl by naming a street after him.
De Maizière, who was part of the delegation negotiating the German Unification Treaty, acknowledged the challenges faced by former East Germans. He urged understanding for their fatigue with change and called for more respect towards them. Despite remaining differences, he considered reunification a 'stroke of luck in history'.
The annual event in Stuttgart's town hall has been held since 2021, celebrating the Day of German Unity. Nopper, in his speech, suggested improving Germans' relationship with their country by honouring figures like Kohl, who played a crucial role in reunification. However, it's unclear if the proposal to name a street after Kohl will be implemented.
The 35th anniversary of German reunification was commemorated in Stuttgart with de Maizière's insightful speech. Nopper's proposal to honour Kohl adds to the ongoing dialogue about how best to celebrate and understand Germany's reunification.
