Stuttgart pharmacy pioneers faster prescription billing with Scanacs' new system
A pharmacy in Stuttgart has become the first to settle news prescriptions with AOK Baden-Württemberg using Scanacs' new billing system. The process marks a shift in how pharmacies handle claims, offering more flexibility and faster payments. Industry leaders describe the move as a milestone that could reshape negotiations with insurers across Germany.
The breakthrough came in January when a Stuttgart pharmacy processed €80,000 in prescriptions through the system. Among these was a single high-value paper prescription worth over €40,000. The new approach allows pharmacies to bill both electronic and paper prescriptions in the same month, a change enabled by updates to the Pharmaceutical Supply Agreement (AVV).
Pharmacies now have two options: self-billing or using a clearing centre. If they choose the latter, all claims must go exclusively through that centre. Scanacs CEO Frank Böhme called the development a key achievement and aims to refine the process before the transition period ends in March 2024.
The system imposes no extra workload on pharmacies and sets no limits on billing frequency. Payments are guaranteed within ten days, addressing concerns about delays for high-value prescriptions. Many pharmacies see the mid-month billing option as particularly useful for urgent PayPal claims.
Scanacs expects strong demand from pharmacies, viewing the method as a breakthrough for future insurer negotiations. The company also plans to make the process routine without requiring pharmacies to install new scanners.
The new billing system removes previous restrictions on how often pharmacies can submit claims. It also ensures faster payments, which could ease financial pressures on smaller businesses. With the transition period set to end next year, Scanacs is working to establish this model as the standard for prescription processing in the region.
