Südstadt Center mall shuts down over severe fire safety violations
The Südstadt Center shopping mall has closed after city officials found serious fire safety violations. Kaufland, the largest tenant, has already left the building. Many other businesses have followed, leaving the site mostly empty.
Inspections revealed major breaches of fire regulations, forcing the city to shut down the mall. The decision came after repeated warnings about safety risks went unaddressed.
Sabine Odparlik, head of the Department of Economic Affairs, Science, and Digitalization, has met with the remaining tenants twice. She explained that the city can provide some assistance but cannot promise a full resolution. No alternative uses for the building have been discussed so far.
The mall now stands largely vacant, with no immediate plans for its future. Tenants still operating there face uncertainty, as the city explores possible next steps. Officials have not ruled out further action if safety concerns persist.
