Sumisip District Hospital activates solar power project
Sumisip District Hospital (SDH) has switched on a new P8 million solar power system to improve medical services in Basilan. The project ensures reliable electricity, even when the local grid fails. Officials say it will protect vital equipment and speed up emergency care for Sumisip and nearby towns.
The solar power initiative was funded by the province’s 20 percent development fund. It includes upgraded electrical wiring to support the hospital’s operations. Governor Mujiv Hataman led the inspection and officially activated the system during a ceremony.
Hataman also toured the hospital’s laboratory, operating rooms, and other critical areas that rely on stable power. He highlighted health as a key focus under Basilan HELPS, a wider program covering environmental protection and public services. Dr. Nur Khan Istarul, a provincial board member, confirmed plans to upgrade SDH to a Level 1 hospital by 2026. Another facility, Maluso General Hospital, is set to open in the third quarter of the same year.
The new solar system removes dependence on Basilan Electric Cooperative’s unstable supply. It will keep essential medical devices running without interruption. The upgrade is part of broader efforts to strengthen healthcare across the province.
