Sumner School Board to Vote on December Break Name: Winter or Christmas?
A debate has been ongoing among Sumner County School Board members regarding the name of the December break. The board is set to vote on the finalized calendar for the 2025-2026 school year on Tuesday, with two versions of the calendar featuring different names for the break.
Last year, the board voted to change the name from Winter Break to Christmas Break. However, a recent debate has seen board member Wade Evans propose changing it back to Winter Break due to constituent feedback. Evans found support in Meghan Breining, who agreed with him, suggesting the change to avoid excluding children.
Board member Tammy Hayes suggested a compromise, offering two versions of the calendar with different names for the break. This would allow for both Christmas Break and Winter Break to be recognized. The debate centered around whether to name the break Christmas Break or Winter Break, with some board members disagreeing, stating that people will always be offended and the change is unnecessary.
The Sumner County School Board is expected to vote on the finalized calendar for the 2025-2026 school year on Tuesday. The calendar, referred to as the '2025-2026 School Year Calendar,' includes both versions with a Winter Break and a Christmas Break for consideration. The board's decision will determine the name of the December break for the upcoming school year.
