Sun's Winter Fuel SOS Campaign Nominated for Making a Difference Award
The Sun's Winter Fuel SOS campaign has been recognised for its impact on pensioners' lives. The campaign, which urged eligible pensioners to apply for Pension Credit to retain Winter Fuel payments, has been nominated for a Journalism Matters 'Making a Difference Award'.
Last winter, the campaign provided practical help to thousands of pensioners. It offered advice and support, including replacing essential appliances for those in need. One beneficiary was war hero Arnold Walton. The campaign also launched a helpline, connecting readers with experts offering guidance on bills and staying warm.
The initiative continued into the festive season with a Christmas SOS appeal in conjunction with Age UK. Paul Farmer, CEO of Age UK, praised the campaign for highlighting the struggles of the elderly during the winter. The campaign's success resulted in significant financial assistance for some pensioners, with John Smith receiving an extra £6,888 a year.
Voting for the Journalism Matters 'Making a Difference Award' is open until Friday 7 November on the News Media Association website. The Sun's Winter Fuel SOS campaign is a testament to the power of journalism in making a real difference in people's lives, particularly among the most vulnerable in society.
