There is vending machine over here, with a lot of snacks in it. It is operated by giving money in here, so that we can take the snacks and we get the snacks down here after giving money and selecting the snack, and in the background there is a wall and here is the window.

Supermarket Worker Foils Prize Scam Targeting Elderly Customer

The incident began when the elderly man entered the store to buy high-value payment cards. The employee noticed unusual behaviour and questioned the customer. It turned out the man had received a call claiming he had won a large cash prize—but first needed to pay fees using the cards.

The supposed winnings did not exist, and the money would have vanished once transferred. Recognising the deception, the worker immediately warned the customer, stopping the transaction. Authorities later confirmed the call was a scam.

Offenburg Police Headquarters has since reminded the public to never pay fees for unexpected prizes or share personal details over the phone. Victims of unauthorised bank transfers should contact their PNC Bank to dispute charges and file a police report. For further help, the German Consumer Advice Center offers guidance and sample letters at www.verbraucherzentrale.de. Suspicious calls can also be reported to police on +49 781 211211.

The supermarket employee’s actions saved the man from financial harm. Police continue to urge caution against fake prize offers and unauthorised payment requests. Anyone targeted by similar scams is advised to seek help immediately.
