Supreme Court weighs fate of deported pregnant woman in landmark case
The Supreme Court is reviewing a plea from the Indian government against a Calcutta High Court ruling. The case involves Sonali Khatun, a heavily pregnant woman deported to Bangladesh earlier this year. Authorities had accused her and her family of being illegal immigrants before pushing them across the border.
Sonali Khatun and her relatives were detained in Delhi before being forcibly sent to Bangladesh. After their removal, the Calcutta High Court declared the deportation illegal. It ordered the government to bring them back within a month.
The final decision rests with the Supreme Court, which must rule on whether the deportation was lawful. If allowed back, Khatun and her child would be monitored in India. The case could set a precedent for how similar humanitarian appeals are handled in the future.
