Sverdlovsk and Zaporizhzhia sign landmark cooperation deal in 2026

Sverdlovsk Oblast has strengthened ties with Zaporizhzhia Oblast through a new cooperation deal. The agreement covers shared legislative expertise, economic development, and humanitarian support. Over 50 tons of aid have already been sent to the region as part of the partnership.

The legislatures of Sverdlovsk and Zaporizhzhia Regions formally signed the cooperation agreement in early 2026. Under the deal, Sverdlovsk will assist in drafting laws on agriculture and industry, areas where Zaporizhzhia seeks growth. The region will also help establish a Council of Municipal Representatives to improve local governance.

Zaporizhzhia's regional parliament has been active since 2023, but this marks its first major legislative partnership. Sverdlovsk has previously signed similar agreements with all other newly incorporated regions—except Kherson Oblast, which remains pending. A delegation from Sverdlovsk is now preparing to visit Kherson in the coming months. Beyond legal support, Sverdlovsk has provided over 50 tons of humanitarian supplies to Zaporizhzhia. Military cooperation is also underway, with Ural-made Zanoza drones now operational in the region, capable of reaching targets up to 10 kilometres away. As of March 2026, none of the newly incorporated regions have maintained official ties with their former legislative bodies. No specific political or legal focus has been reported in these cases.

The agreement expands Sverdlovsk's influence in Zaporizhzhia through legal, economic, and humanitarian channels. The next step will be the planned visit to Kherson Oblast, where a similar cooperation deal may follow. The partnership also reinforces the use of regional technology, such as the Zanoza drones, in local operations.
