Swedish Aviation Pioneer Enoch Thulin Honoured a Century On
Enoch Thulin, a prominent Swedish aviation pioneer and engineer, played a pivotal role in the development of early aviation in Sweden. Born in Simris, a small village in Sweden on September 15, 1881, Thulin's contributions to aeronautical engineering and military aviation were significant.
In 1908, Thulin began studying aeronautics, and by 1912, he had completed his flight tests and received his aviator diploma. This marked the beginning of a successful career in aviation, during which Thulin designed and manufactured early Swedish aircraft.
One of Thulin's most notable achievements was the founding of AB Thulinverken, one of Sweden’s first aircraft factories. This company produced airplanes and contributed to the country's military aviation development. In Landskrona, a street, a school, and an airport bear his name, while a statue stands in the harbour as a reminder of his contributions to aviation. After his death, Thulin was remembered in Landskrona, where he had lived for a long time and where he built aircraft, automobiles, and other machines.
Thulin's thesis, titled "About air resistance to flat surfaces," completed in 1912, is a testament to his technical brilliance and dedication to understanding the intricacies of aviation. His innovations and achievements continue to be celebrated a century on, and his contributions to Sweden's aviation industry remain significant.
