Swiss Air Lines rethinks long-haul expansion amid geopolitical and economic hurdles
Swiss International Air Lines is reviewing plans for a new long-haul route in its winter 2026/2027 schedule. The airline had originally intended to launch a service to Osaka in 2020, but that plan has since been shelved. Now, economic pressures and geopolitical challenges are shaping its search for a viable alternative. The airline is focusing on Asia, South America, and Latin America as potential regions for expansion. Industry sources suggest cities like Manila, Lima, Mexico City, and destinations in India could be strong contenders. Meanwhile, North America is not under consideration due to Swiss' already extensive network there.
Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Denpasar, Jakarta, and Manila have been identified as underserved or unserved from Zurich Airport. However, geopolitical tensions are complicating the decision. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, EU sanctions have forced flights between Europe and Japan to reroute, adding roughly two hours to journey times. Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East—such as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran—have also led to flight suspensions and diversions, including Swiss and Lufthansa pausing services to Tel Aviv and Dubai until at least May 2026.
Longer flight paths increase fuel consumption and operational costs, reducing the profitability of new routes. Swiss has already reported a 27% drop in profits for 2025, adding financial strain. The airline is also in talks for a new collective labour agreement, which may further influence its expansion plans.
Edelweiss, Swiss' sister carrier, is exploring its own set of destinations. Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, San Diego, and Vietnam are among the locations being assessed for potential new services. Swiss will need to balance economic viability with geopolitical risks when selecting its next long-haul destination. The final choice will depend on route demand, operational costs, and stability in the target region. A decision is expected ahead of the winter 2026/2027 schedule release.
