Swiss insurer Sanitas exposed for misleading pre-existing condition claims

A Swiss health insurer, Sanitas, has faced criticism for its high-profile advertising campaign that promised full health insurance coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. The campaign claimed to be the only one of its kind in Switzerland, but a recent ruling found the campaign misleading.

In 2024, Sanitas launched an advertising push stating it was the sole provider in Switzerland to offer complete supplementary health care for individuals with pre-existing conditions. The campaign gained widespread media attention and even won an industry award for innovation.

A man with Crohn's disease later applied for coverage but was rejected by Sanitas. He called the company's advertising 'clearly misleading,' as it directly contradicted his experience. The Swiss Fairness Commission (Lauterkeitskommission) investigated and ruled that the insurer's claims were unfair and deceptive.

No other Swiss health insurer currently offers full supplementary care for people with pre-existing conditions. Despite Sanitas' promises, the ruling confirmed that customers had been misled by the campaign.

The Fairness Commission's decision highlights the gap between Sanitas' advertised promises and its actual policies. The case leaves individuals with pre-existing conditions still without guaranteed supplementary insurance options in Switzerland.
