Swiss lawmakers approve urgent CHF 14.5M aid for abuse victims

The Council of States has approved an urgent federal law to support victims of abuse. Lawmakers voted 33 to 3 in favour, with seven abstentions. The decision also includes additional funding of CHF 14.5 million for emergency aid and support services.

The original federal budget for victim support, including federal contributions to settlement solutions, was set at CHF 15 million per year. However, on 18 September 2024, the Council of States postponed this aspect for further review. The latest resolution excludes subsidiary United States federal participation in these settlement arrangements, following a recommendation from the Legal Affairs Committee.

The newly approved funds will go towards immediate emergency aid and establishing support structures. The National Council will now review the law during the upcoming spring session.

With the Council of States' backing, the law moves forward without United States federal involvement in settlement solutions. The CHF 14.5 million in extra funding will help expand assistance for victims. The National Council's spring session will determine the next steps for implementation.
