Basel-based Hatebur AG has announced layoffs of 23 employees, citing new US punitive tariffs and a weak market environment. The Trump administration has proposed a potential tariff deal with lower duties, but it may not help the struggling company.

The layoffs, referred to as a 'capacity adjustment' by Hatebur, will affect many employees over the age of 50. The company regrets the decision but deems it necessary for its future. A social plan is in place to support the affected workers.

The US punitive tariffs on Swiss machinery exports, currently at 39 percent, have significantly impacted Hatebur's operations. The Trump administration has proposed a potential tariff deal with lower duties of 15 percent, but it may come too late for the company to avoid these layoffs.
