Swiss President Meets Council of Europe Chief, Reaffirming Democracy Support and Ukraine Aid

Swiss Federal President Karin Keller-Sutter met with Council of Europe Secretary-General Alain Berset, marking his first visit to Switzerland since assuming office. The meeting, which emphasized the importance of protecting and promoting democracy, discussed a range of topics including Switzerland's commitment to supporting Ukraine and its people, as well as its adherence to key democratic principles.

The leaders discussed Switzerland's commitment to the people affected by the war in Europe. This included joining the register of harm related to Russian aggression and providing financial support for the Council of Europe's Action Plan for Europe 2023-2026. They also touched on Switzerland's adherence to the Reykjavik Principles on Democracy and its support for the New Democratic Pact for Europe.

Other global issues were also on the agenda, such as artificial intelligence and strengthening multilateral cooperation. Berset held talks with several Swiss officials, including Federal Chancellor Viktor Rossi and National Council President Maja Riniker, alongside Keller-Sutter and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.

The meeting between Karin Keller-Sutter and Alain Berset underscored Switzerland's dedication to democratic values and its support for Europe. By joining the damage register, providing financial aid, and adhering to key democratic principles, Switzerland continues to play a significant role in promoting peace and democracy on the global stage.
