Swiss schools split over banning phones in classrooms by 2025

A growing debate over banning cell phones and social media in Swiss schools has emerged across multiple cantons. While some regions have already introduced restrictions, a national commission has weighed in with recommendations against outright bans for children. In the canton of Nidwalden, schools took a firm stance by prohibiting mobile phones and digital devices from the start of the 2025/2026 academic year. Meanwhile, Solothurn adopted a more flexible approach, allowing each school to decide independently on potential bans. The EKKJ’s recommendations highlight a shift away from blanket bans toward structured media education. Schools in cantons like Nidwalden and Solothurn now face decisions on how to implement these guidelines. The focus remains on balancing digital access with responsible use for children and teenagers.
