Swiss soldiers may soon store ammunition at home again

A Swiss parliamentary committee has backed a plan to let soldiers store ammunition at home again. The move follows years of centralised storage and comes as security concerns grow. The proposal now heads for wider debate after a close vote in the Council of States.

The Security Policy Committee of the Council of States voted 7 to 5 in favour of a motion by Werner Salzmann, a long-serving member. His seat is now held by Martin Oehy, who took over in 2026 after Walter Schweizer retired following 25 years in office. The motion argues that service members should be allowed to keep a supply of ammunition for their personal firearms.

If approved, the change would mark a return to older practices for the Swiss Armed Forces. Soldiers would once again be permitted to store ammunition at home. The final decision now rests with the full Council of States.
