Switzerland and EU forge closer ties ahead of 2025 Upper Rhine talks
Baden-Württemberg Minister President Winfried Kretschmann has underscored the significance of maintaining strong ties with Switzerland, as the cantonal governments of Basel-Stadt and Aargau, along with his own region, commit to fostering a long-term, sustainable relationship with the European Union (EU).
The upcoming meeting of the German-French-Swiss Upper Rhine Conference (ORK) in 2025 will discuss the Switzerland-EU relationship, with the aim of Switzerland's full participation in the EU research framework program Horizon Europe. This follows the recent approval of the Swiss population for a final agreement between Switzerland and the EU, marking a new chapter in their relationship.
The cross-border cooperation between Baden-Württemberg, Basel-Stadt, and Aargau has been close and trusting for many years, with the cantonal governments repeatedly expressing their desire to establish a solid and lasting basis for the relationship with the EU. Dr. Conradin Cramer, Government President of Basel-Stadt, advocates for good and stable relations between Switzerland and the EU.
The upcoming ORK meeting will further strengthen the ties between Switzerland and the EU, with the support of the cantonal governments and the commitment of Baden-Württemberg. The stable relationships emphasized by Minister President Kretschmann are crucial for the economy and society on both sides of the border.
