Switzerland and USA near landmark trade deal to slash tariffs by December

Switzerland and the USA are nearing a trade deal that could cut tariffs on Swiss goods by more than half. Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin has defended the agreement against criticism, calling it a practical step forward. Negotiations with US Trade Minister Howard Lutnick remain ongoing.

Parmelin expects US tariffs on Swiss products to drop from 39% to 15% starting in December. He described the deal as an example of realpolitik, arguing that the concessions made were necessary and balanced.

Critics have claimed Switzerland gave away too much in the talks. Parmelin dismissed these concerns, insisting that negotiations are still active and no final terms have been set. He also denied allegations that Swiss business leaders received confidential details about the draft agreement.

If approved, the agreement would significantly reduce trade barriers for Swiss exporters. The tariff cut from 39% to 15% would take effect in December, provided the talks conclude successfully. Parmelin has reiterated that the process remains open to adjustments.
