Switzerland in Talks to Recognize Palestinian State, Pledges Gaza Support
Switzerland has been engaged in discussions with the Palestinian Authority regarding recognition of a Palestinian state. A recent meeting in Bern saw Mohammad Schtajjeh, a Palestinian envoy, and Swiss officials discuss this topic, among other issues.
Switzerland, though supportive of Palestinian statehood, has not yet recognized Palestine. Mohammad Schtajjeh welcomed the possibility of a Swiss referendum on this recognition. Meanwhile, Ramallah has called for an international conference to rebuild Gaza, with Switzerland pledging participation but no specific financial commitment.
Bern has emphasized that recognition should follow a reform process, showing interest in the Palestinian constitution and planned Hamas elections. However, the Palestinian Authority has expressed dissatisfaction with the 'Trump Plan', seeking a clear roadmap for ending Israeli occupation of the West Bank.
Switzerland, as a significant international player, is urged to lead in recognizing a Palestinian state. Despite not recognizing Palestine yet, Switzerland has shown support and willingness to engage in the reconstruction of Gaza. The Palestinian Authority continues to push for recognition and elections in all areas, including East Jerusalem.
