Switzerland seeks breakthrough in US trade talks to end tariff dispute

Swiss Economics Minister Guy Parmelin is heading to Washington this week for key trade talks. The visit aims to push forward negotiations on a long-running customs dispute with the United States. A deal could soon cut punitive tariffs that have hit Swiss exports since August.

The meeting, set for Thursday, will bring Parmelin together with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Accompanying him is Hélène Budliger Artieda, the State Secretary for Economic Affairs. A spokesperson for the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER) confirmed the trip’s focus on resolving tariff tensions.

A successful deal would ease the financial strain on Swiss exporters caused by the higher tariffs. The outcome of this week’s talks could mark a major step toward resolving the dispute. Final terms and timing will depend on the progress made in Washington.
