Switzerland to Appoint Honorary Consul in Remote Vanuatu for Swiss Expats
Switzerland is set to appoint an honorary consul in Vanuatu, a remote Pacific island nation with a small Swiss community. This move aims to provide better support and representation for Swiss nationals living there and strengthen ties with the host country.
Vanuatu, home to 18 registered Swiss nationals, will soon have its own honorary consul. This decision comes due to its distance from the nearest Swiss diplomatic representation. Honorary consuls, numbering 225 worldwide, act as volunteer diplomats, providing assistance during crises, promoting cultural exchange, and boosting Switzerland's image abroad.
The Swiss foreign ministry is seeking a suitable candidate to fill this role. The ideal applicant should speak on behalf of Switzerland, maintain contacts with the Swiss community, and provide support in emergencies. They must have close ties to Switzerland, live in or near Port Vila, have an established network in Vanuatu, be under 65, and provide necessary infrastructure. The identity and national origin of the applicant remain confidential at this stage.
Honorary consuls, who work for free and receive an annual expense allowance of CHF6,500 ($8,000), play a crucial role in Switzerland's diplomatic network. Their number has grown to 225 in over 100 countries, reflecting increased travel and economic interests. The appointment of an honorary consul in Vanuatu underscores Switzerland's commitment to supporting its citizens and fostering international relations, even in the most distant corners of the globe.
