Sylke Herse Named 'Farmer of the Year' for Innovative CrowdFarming
Sylke Herse, a pioneering farmer from Lower Saxony, has been named 'Farmer of the Year' at the prestigious CERES AWARD 2025. Her innovative approach to agriculture has earned her the €20,000 prize and widespread recognition.
Herse's farm, Bickbeernhof in Brokeloh, is a beacon of innovation in the region, attracting around 70,000 visitors annually. Despite its remote location, the farm has gained national attention for its unique CrowdFarming initiative. Through this method, Herse ships approximately 20,000 packages of fresh, climate-neutral blueberries each year, straight to consumers across Europe, without the need for refrigeration.
The jury, comprising Simon Michel-Berger, Anke Fritz, Christian Pohl, Antje Gödecke, Susanne Schulze Bockeloh, and last year's winner Tobias Babel, praised Herse's bold investments and innovative marketing strategies. Babel, the 'Farmer of the Year' in 2024, joined the jury this year to help decide on the highest award. Out of over 200 applicants, Herse's exceptional work stood out, making her the second woman to receive Germany’s highest agricultural distinction.
Herse has previously made her mark in the agricultural community, having won the 'Entrepreneur of the Year' category at the CERES AWARD. This year's 'Farmer of the Year' title is a testament to her continued dedication and success in the field.
Sylke Herse's win at the CERES AWARD 2025 is a significant milestone for women in agriculture. Her innovative approach to farming, as demonstrated through her CrowdFarming initiative, sets a new standard for the industry. With her €20,000 prize, Herse is poised to continue her groundbreaking work, further advancing the agricultural sector in Germany.
