Tahawwur Rana Extradited to India After 17 Years

Tahawwur Rana, a key figure in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, has been extradited to India after 17 years. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) submitted a compliance report under Section 207 of the Criminal Procedure Code, paving the way for Rana's return.

The NIA's persistent efforts have finally borne fruit. In 2009, the US Department of Justice sought additional information regarding Rana's role in the 26/11 attacks. The NIA promptly responded, providing fresh evidence that strengthened the case against Rana. This collaboration led to the first supplementary chargesheet filed in July 2025.

The US authorities, working closely with the FBI and other intelligence agencies, extradited Rana to India on April 9, 2025. This was made possible through the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) process, with the NIA's recent MLAT request routed through the Ministry of External Affairs.

Rana's extradition is a significant milestone in the ongoing investigation into the 2008 Mumbai attacks. His return to India will allow for further questioning and potentially new leads in the case. The NIA's commitment to justice, demonstrated through its diligent pursuit of evidence and collaboration with international agencies, is commendable.
