Tamil film Parasakthi sparks political row over historical inaccuracies
The Tamil Nadu Youth Congress has called for a ban on the Tamil film Parasakthi, accusing it of distorting history. Directed by Sudha Kongara, the movie centres on Tamil Nadu’s resistance to Hindi imposition and released in cinemas on January 10, 2026. The political group claims the film falsely portrays a 1965 incident involving former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Parasakthi hit screens after overcoming several censorship hurdles. The action-drama, rated 16+, stars Sivakarthikeyan, Atharvaa Murali, Ravi Mohan, and Sreeleela in key roles. It is also scheduled for release in Regal Cinemas from January 15, 2026.
The Youth Congress has taken strong exception to a scene showing Indira Gandhi in Coimbatore on February 12, 1965. According to the group, the film depicts her witnessing a train burning and accepting signatures against Hindi imposition—events they claim never happened. They argue that these sequences malign both the Indian National Congress and its leaders. In response, the Youth Congress has demanded the removal of the disputed scenes. They have also called for a public apology from the filmmakers. Their campaign includes the hashtag #BanParasakthiMovie, which has been widely shared on social media.
The controversy places Parasakthi at the centre of a political debate over historical accuracy. The Youth Congress insists the film misrepresents key events and harms the legacy of the Congress party. As of now, the production team has not issued a formal response to the demands.
