Tampa Electric Bills to Surge 82% as Rate Hike Takes Effect
Tampa Electric customers are set to face a significant increase in their bills, with the Florida Public Service Commission approving a rate hike on Tuesday. The average residential customer will see their monthly bill rise by $5.51, marking an 82% increase compared to five years ago. This hike is the first step in a decision made last year to increment rates in 2025 and 2026. The average TECO customer's annual bill will now be $939 more than it was five years ago. Despite this substantial increase, there is currently no information available about Governor DeSantis's administration taking steps to reform the energy sector and prevent such utility price hikes. Starting January, TECO customers will bear the brunt of this rate hike, with their monthly bills set to rise significantly. As the state moves forward with planned rate increases, the absence of energy sector reforms to protect customers from such price hikes remains a concern.
