Taurus missile production by MBDA set to recommence

The German Armed Forces' stockpile of Taurus cruise missiles is currently undergoing modernization and comprehensive maintenance, as confirmed by Thomas Gottschild, CEO of MBDA Germany. According to Gottschild, the production resumption is contingent on receiving a customer order.

Gottschild stated that the modernization and maintenance of the Taurus stock is based on an order approved at the end of 2024. This comes after a decade since the last Taurus cruise missile was delivered to the German Armed Forces in 2010.

The Taurus cruise missile is a product that can be ordered for production, and MBDA Germany is ready to initiate production immediately upon order. The company is now making operational again the 600 units of Taurus cruise missiles stored in the German Armed Forces' depots.

The Taurus cruise missile, produced by arms conglomerate MBDA, will continue to play a central role in distance weapons that can strike deep into enemy territory. Apart from Germany, Sweden, South Korea, and Spain have also acquired the Taurus cruise missile, but it has never been used in combat.

It was reported that the Taurus cruise missile was planned for local assembly in Ukraine as of mid-2025, indicating it may be in or near operational use in that conflict. However, Germany has explicitly ruled out supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine as of July 2025.

No other countries are explicitly listed as Taurus operators in the available information, making Germany the primary known operator. Ukraine is expected to be a user or assembling Taurus missiles locally, but no additional nations besides Germany and the emerging Ukrainian usage have been confirmed to have acquired Taurus missiles.

Gottschild made this statement to Handelsblatt on Friday, emphasizing MBDA's readiness to resume production as soon as an order is received. The Taurus cruise missile, with its proven capabilities, remains a key asset in the arsenal of nations seeking advanced long-range strike options.

The Taurus cruise missile's production resumption, as stated by Gottschild, is directly tied to receiving an order in the final months of 2024. Additionally, the aerospace and finance sectors stand to be significantly impacted as MBDA Germany readies to initiate Taurus production, given its potential appeal in the global arms industry.
