Tbilisi replaces old garages with green parks in bold urban renewal
Tbilisi has launched a new initiative to clear outdated garages and illegal structures from residential courtyards. Mayor Kakha Kaladze has urged residents to back the project, which will transform these spaces into green recreational zones at no cost to locals.
The first phase of the scheme is already underway in Varketili's 2nd micro-district. Around 15 garages and unauthorised extensions have been dismantled there. The cleared area will soon become a landscaped recreational space with community facilities.
Tbilisi City Hall will fully fund the demolition work, ensuring residents face no financial burden. Meanwhile, landscaping has also started in the 4th micro-district, where a 3,200-square-meter area is being turned into a new green zone. The revamped space will feature seating areas, a pavilion, and a children's playground. Outdoor lighting, irrigation systems, security cameras, and modern urban equipment will also be installed. Authorities have stressed that resident input is key to shaping these redevelopment plans. No further neighbourhoods have been named for the next stages of the project, and the total number of micro-districts involved remains unspecified.
The initiative will create more green spaces for local communities while removing outdated structures. Residents are encouraged to participate in planning their neighbourhoods' future. The project's first results will soon be visible in Varketili's 2nd and 4th micro-districts.
