Tech-Savvy Traveler Finds Blessing in Internet Shutdown
During his trip, Schwarz was completely offline. He did not receive messages from his child, nor was he targeted by any suspicious emails claiming to be from Bill Gates offering to give away his fortune. His bank did not reach out about reduced savings product offerings, and he remained unaware of the latest match results of Wiener Sportclub.
Schwarz also missed out on media weather updates, such as 'Storm monster whips across the country' or 'Arctic blast sends shockwaves'. He was oblivious to social media content like humorous 'haha' reels about the Louvre heist or updates about Elk Emil. Even alerts about Federal Reserve interest rate changes or political figures like Strache did not reach him.
The internet shutdown in the country was part of a broader effort by President Hassan to suppress unrest and protests following the 2025 Tanzanian general election. Despite the heavy-handed measures, including curfews and police violence, Schwarz found the lack of connectivity to be a welcome change.
Andreas Schwarz's trip to a country with no internet due to political unrest has left him contemplating a voluntary digital detox on future vacations. He found the experience of being completely offline refreshing and suggests others might benefit from a similar break from constant connectivity. Schwarz can be reached at andreas.schwarz@ourwebsite for further insights on his experience.
