Telekom Completes Transition to Fiber-Optic Installations
Telekom has successfully transitioned to new legal requirements, focusing on fiber-optic installations over TV cable connections. This shift impacts millions of tenants and the company's TV cable offerings.
Telekom completed the transition within 26 weeks, abolishing the secondary cost privilege for TV cable connections as of summer 2024. Landlords can no longer pass on cable TV fees as part of rental ancillary costs. During the transition, Telekom deactivated unused TV cable connections and braced for widespread non-payers who have now presumably been disconnected.
The company has stopped actively promoting TV cable connections to property owners since summer 2024. It is presumed that Telekom no longer offers new Kabel-TV contracts and has shifted existing ones to other technologies, leading to a decrease in the number of cable-TV connections operated by Telekom since summer 2024. Despite this, Deutsche Telekom and its joint venture, GlasfaserPlus, continue to report record expansions in fiber-optic access.
Telekom's successful transition to the new legal requirements promotes fiber-optic installations, benefiting both tenants and the company. The shift away from TV cable connections, while impacting existing services, allows Telekom to focus on expanding its fiber-optic network.
